06 Sep Handcrafted in Spain: what it really means
Handcrafted in Spain.
I put it on every bag. And it’s not just a label.
We live in a time when almost everything for sale carries some version of that phrase. Made with love. Artisanal. Locally sourced. Most of the time these are words that sound nice but don’t actually say anything.
When I say handcrafted in Spain, I mean something specific.
Belén Dols bags are produced in artisan workshops in Mallorca and Cádiz. They’re small workshops, with a limited number of people working in them. I know these people. I’ve been to these workshops. I know how they work and what standards they hold.
I could produce more cheaply elsewhere. There are countries where production costs are much lower and where you can manufacture at a much larger scale. But that would mean not knowing whose hands are on each piece, or what conditions they work in, or what that person actually cares about in what they do.
And that matters to me. Just as much as the material.
When I say artisanal, I don’t mean the bag looks rustic or imperfect. I mean there’s a person who has paid attention to every stitch, who knows the material they’re working with, who has learned how to handle it. There’s knowledge and presence behind every piece that simply doesn’t exist in mass production.
You can feel it. You don’t always know exactly where. But anyone who’s held a well-made object and one that isn’t knows the difference.
I’ve spent years working with leather by hand, and I always notice it.
Being artisanal also means the production is slow. That I can’t make a hundred bags in a week. That each collection has a limited number of pieces. That once they’re sold, there’s no immediate restock.
That might seem like a limitation. To me, it’s part of staying true to what I believe: not making more than can be made well, and not more than people will actually use.

Un abrazo
Belén

FAQ
Why do you produce in Mallorca and Cádiz?
Because they do impeccable work. These are the workshops I built a relationship with from the very start of the project. I know the people who work there and I trust how they work. Being close by also allows for a level of quality control that would be impossible if I produced abroad.
How many people work on each bag?
It depends on the model. Some require more work than others. Each stage of making a bag calls for a different skill: pattern-making, cutting, stitching. There’s no single pair of hands behind each piece.
Does that make it more expensive?
Yes. Artisan production in Spain costs more than industrial production elsewhere. It’s a conscious decision. Belén Dols prices reflect the real cost of doing something properly, with quality materials and fair working conditions.
Do you do custom production or special orders?
Not at the moment. I work with closed, limited-edition collections. If that changes in the future, I’ll let the newsletter community know.
